![]() A storm surge around 10 feet with waves likely as high as 20 feet crashed into the barrier islands including Palm Beach. Damage in coastal Palm Beach County was severe especially in the Jupiter area where the eye wall of the hurricane persisted longer than at any other location because of where the storm crossed the coast. It moved through the Bahama Islands on September 14-15, and on Sunday evening around 615 PM, September 16, the hurricane made landfall in the United States in Palm Beach County between Jupiter and Boca Raton. To some extent, the devastation in Puerto Rico provided some warning to residents of Florida’s east coast. More than 300 persons were killed by this storm in Puerto Rico, and it is known as the San Felipe II Hurricane because of the day on which it struck. It churned across the Atlantic, and devastated the island of Guadeloupe on September 12, moved through the Virgin Islands, and struck a direct hit on Puerto Rico on the 13 th, El Día de San Felipe. Only two years after the Great Miami Hurricane, what would become the second category 4 ( Saffir-Simpson scale) hurricane to strike South Florida in as many years formed off the coast of Africa in early September. A rural, agrarian society, dependent on migrant labor, was plowing and harvesting along the shores of the lake behind a hastily built muck levee. The newly incorporated town of Belle Glade was growing steadily, fueled by the rapidly expanding agriculture in fields nearby. The rich, black muck soil near Lake Okeechobee was already being utilized for its tremendous agricultural productivity. On the opposite side of the county, a quite different situation was emerging. The Atlantic breezes were balmy and the climate was warm. The City of Palm Beach, founded only 34 years earlier by Henry Flagler, was incorporated in 1911 and had become a playground for the rich and famous, while West Palm Beach grew up on the opposite side of Lake Worth as a place where the support staff lived. Even so, a bellwether of what was to come occurred with the Great Miami Hurricane of 1926 as flood waters from Lake Okeechobee were swept by that storm into Moore Haven, the county seat of Glades County, killing over 100 people. However, most of the damage from that storm was in Dade and Broward counties. ![]() The devastating Great Miami Hurricane of September, 1926, had already sounded a loud alarm to the new residents about the vulnerability of their new homes to tropical cyclones. The land and real estate boom was already beginning to fade, although many subdivisions and new communities were still being built. In September, 1928, only about 50,000 persons lived in South Florida. ![]() WEATHER FORECAST OFFICE (WFO) Miami, Florida ![]()

9/7/2023 0 Comments Manifold garden falling gif![]() ![]() It is currently available on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.This copy of the game was obtained via publisher and reviewed on the Switch. Rating: 7 out of 10ĭisclosures: This game is developed and published by William Chyr Studio LLC. Manifold Garden never dives into its concepts, or, perhaps, it only dives far enough to end up back where it started. Rather, the puzzles skitter across the surface of every new idea, dipping into each one just enough to suggest fascinating interactions and then move on at a brisk pace. The sublime power of Manifold Garden’s visuals is never matched by its puzzles. Yet all too often Manifold Garden congeals into a maze of sterile passages and stairwells - an Escher-esque brutalist nightmare I wanted more to escape than to observe. Its endless atria and infinite pyramids are astonishing. ![]() Faced with its enormous, mechanized pagodas and sprawling Greek temples, I always wanted to drink the sights in. That lack aside, the world can be striking to look at. One does this not because an overt mission has been given, but because there’s nothing else to do. Solving each area of puzzles dispels black clouds that seem to corrupt its space. The world traced out by Manifold Garden’s straight lines has no coherent architecture or purpose. ![]() Sound effects imply that the game’s viewpoint is attached to a pair of feet, but there is no name or dialogue. Manifold Garden also seems uninterested in complementing its puzzles with any kind of story, or even just a scenario. Only in the game’s short coda do significant numbers of these ideas all-too-briefly collide. Most new ideas show up just long enough to hint at their potential, and then get dropped for the next thing. What all of these additions share is that the game doesn’t spend much time on them. Manifold Garden adds a number of little wrinkles to these elements - portal doorways, beams that cause fruits to change their orientation, and huge sliding blocks that move with gravity. This same behavior is true for streams of water that stop flowing and become walkways when the player changes gravity. As long as their matching “down” is active, they can be carried around and placed on switches or the floor, but as soon as the gravitational direction is changed, they freeze in place. If it becomes necessary to reach a higher platform, one needs only redefine the frame of reference so that the wall becomes the floor before walking to a suitable spot, and then returning to the original reference frame.Īs this is a garden, there are strange trees present bearing cubic “fruits” that are color-coded (and marked with arrows) to match a particular gravitational direction. Here, Manifold Garden’s solution is less mundane - the player can change the direction of gravity by activating any surface perpendicular to the current “down”. Since there is no damage on landing, with the aid of a little forward momentum, a player can move across a gap or slide off the bottom of a building and alight on the top.Įnclosed spaces pose something of a challenge for this paradigm. Fortunately, Manifold Garden’s levels are tessellated, so falling out the bottom of one causes the player to fall in from the top. After all, in real life, tumbling into a gap very rarely enables a person to cross it. The absence of a jump, however, forces other verbs to the fore. It is, by nature, a first-person puzzle-platformer, and many of the puzzles require that the player move from a low platform to a high one, or cross a gap. Manifold Garden doesn’t have any way for the player’s avatar to jump. WTF So we’re just going to end with a 2001-esque light show, huh? ![]() 9/7/2023 0 Comments Sync signal web and phone![]() ![]() Check if you're unpaired from the web page.Learn more about Android battery optimisation. Chief among them are things like Hitman and Splinter Cell – annoyingly Prince of Persia didn’t make the jump either, perhaps because ports of the second and third games exist on the PSP (which meant we missed out on the brilliant Sands of Time). The brilliantly weird Metal Gear Ac!d games from the PSP – which took the stealth-action gameplay and made it turn-based – are nowhere to be found.įrustratingly, Vita released during a period when PS2 HD Collections were all the rage on PS3 and did a very good job of getting an initial few – Final Fantasy Metal Gear Solid Sly Cooper etc., yet it missed out on a whole bunch of others. But others make little sense and gaps are there in every era – for example, the first WipEout game from PS1 is available, but the vastly superior 2097 is missing along with its successor Wip3out. Some of these have been explained at various points in the past – Kingdom Hearts has had a hi story of not getting digital releases presumably due to the nature of the contracts signed at the time, while Tekken 3 features a licenced guest character in Gon. It’s perhaps because of this that the titles that aren’t there are more glaringly obvious and are mostly things that should have been addressed. ![]() Thankfully, Vita has done a great job of collecting the majority of the ‘highlights’ of each PlayStation era – from Crash on the PS1 and Patapon on the PSP through God of War on the PS2 and Littlebigplanet on the PS3. Hilariously, a great number of the incompatible-in-both games are actually Sony’s own releases. Great games like Twisted Metal: Head On are listed but not transferable in both stores whereas some games are specific to a certain region – the Burnout titles work in NA but not EU. Thanks to the great glitch of 2014 users were able to confirm that pretty much every PS1 and PSP game on the store will run on Vita, but for some reason a number just can’t be transferred to it. I assume the reasoning for all of these discrepancies is ‘licencing issues’, but that’s a disappointing excuse for so many games to be locked to the region.Īnd on the topic of licencing issues, it’s particularly annoying to see games actually on PSN that are compatible with Vita but unable to be transferred to it. The situation is aggravated by the existence of the Japanese store – filled to the brim with even more classics like my favourite PS1 fighting series Battle Arena Toshinden, yet these aren’t available in the west at all. I’ve gotten around it by owning two consoles, one for each account, but this is a luxury not available to most. You can go through the awkward method of switching memory cards and reformatting, but this is fiddly and not really a practical solution. The real reason for this frustration, of course, is because account-switching isn’t possible on the handheld. Yet things are arguably better on the EU store as a number of classic games are compatible which aren’t in the NA s tore – primarily the Crash and Spyro games which many people would consider the best PS1 classics to actually own on Vita in the first place. As a European gamer I’ve always felt like we got the bum deal – things like the PS1 Megaman games are completely missing from the store, along with classic JRPG’s like Breath of Fire IV and Legend of Dragoon. I still find it thrilling to be able to choose between the Spyro trilogy and the first three Metal Gear Solid games on the train and no amount of pointing out flaws will diminish that.īy far the biggest frustration in having the Vita as a portable legacy games device is the differences between each region’s PSN stores. Let me preface this by saying that I still think the console does a fantastic job with it – both of my 64GB memory cards are filled with games that I played growing up and am happy to be able to take on the go with me. ![]() 9/7/2023 0 Comments Arq backup destinations![]() ![]() Why Build Your Own Solution?Ĭloud-based backups predate even the term “cloud” for distributed online storage. Expect more options to arise in the future. This article provides a roadmap for how you can roll your own cloud backup and not give up anything in the process. All cloud storage companies regularly lower their prices, and a recent price drop from B2 now makes it a reasonable option for your own backup. I reviewed Arq for Macworld in March 2017, and found it generally good, although it needs more refinement in its restore process Arq added B2 support a year ago.īackblaze B2 competes with Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Google Cloud Storage, the two biggest similar firms in the space. Paid cloud services can readily fill this gap, such as Backblaze (a TidBITS sponsor), but you can also now roll your own cloud service at a reasonable price by combining Haystack Software’s Arq backup app for macOS with Backblaze’s B2 on-demand, usage-based cloud storage service. It’s a bizarre omission because Apple has every other piece in place to make it an offering. Despite Apple’s commitment to iCloud and the availability of up to 2 terabytes of storage, the company offers no set-and-forget backup option for the Mac. And it doesn’t help that Apple just killed the Time Capsule (see “ RIP: Apple AirPort, 1999–2018,” 27 April 2018). Time Machine requires a separate external drive or partition, making it feel long in the tooth. Downie, centre, leads the band through a concert in Vancouver, on July, 24, 2016. It’s a brilliant way to do an end run around performance anxiety. Not only did this serve me well, I could see his strategy in his own performances. Gord told me to speak to one person at a time, and move on. Sometimes, he said, he would sing to one person at a time, not the whole arena. Gord was delighted, but concerned about how I would fare in front of an audience of 20,000. Just before the tour, I gave a lecture on brain-tumour research in Chicago at the world’s largest clinical cancer-research meeting. At other times I was the only health-care professional he would trust. ![]() At times, Gord didn’t want me near, my presence reminding him of what he didn’t want the summer to be about. I had to learn to wear black to blend in to the backdrop, I had to learn stage lingo and remember my pseudonym when checking in to tour hotels. I made a lot of rookie mistakes as I travelled with the band and worked backstage. The Tragically Hip crew – from management, to security, to the stage crew, to the drivers – all understood the vision: to honour Gord’s wish to tour, to celebrate the band’s legacy and to give back to the fans who had supported them for over 30 years. So, in a way, a transistor is like a variable, adjustable resistor. If a valve can finely adjust the width of a pipe, then a transistor can finely adjust the resistance between collector and emitter. Transistors are created by either stacking an n on top of a p on top of an n, or p over n over p.Ī transistor can do the same thing - linearly controlling the current through a circuit at some point between fully off (an open circuit) and fully on (a short circuit).įrom our water analogy, the width of a pipe is similar to the resistance in a circuit. A semiconductor material with extra electrons is called an n-type ( n for negative because electrons have a negative charge) and a material with electrons removed is called a p-type (for positive). Some of those layers have extra electrons added to them (a process called "doping"), and others have electrons removed (doped with "holes" - the absence of electrons). Transistors are built by stacking three different layers of semiconductor material together. Using the diode (or resistance) test function on a multimeter, you can measure across the BE and BC terminals to check for the presence of those "diodes".) Transistor Structure and Operation (This model is useful if you need to test a transistor. ![]() There's a whole lot of weird quantum physics level stuff controlling the interactions between the three terminals. Don't base your understanding of a transistor's operation on that model (and definitely don't try to replicate it on a breadboard, it won't work). The diode representation is a good place to start, but it's far from accurate. The diode connecting base to emitter is the important one here it matches the direction of the arrow on the schematic symbol, and shows you which way current is intended to flow through the transistor. By narrowing our focus down - getting a solid understanding of the NPN - it'll be easier to understand the PNP (or MOSFETS, even) by comparing how it differs from the NPN. We'll turn our focus even sharper by limiting our early discussion to the NPN. Digging even deeper into transistor types, there are actually two versions of the BJT: NPN and PNP. In this tutorial we'll focus on the BJT, because it's slightly easier to understand. There are two types of basic transistor out there: bi-polar junction (BJT) and metal-oxide field-effect (MOSFET).
